Advantages: Some very entertaining programmes along with educational ones
Disadvantages: Repeats, some boring programmes
I have two children of cbeebies age! My son is 4 and a half and my daughter is just turned 2. They both watched cbeebies from about the age of 6 months when they could sit up and enjoyed the bright colours and songs. Obviously at that age the TV was limited.
These days I am ashamed to say that the TV goes in the morning and stays on till I go to bed!! We're not necessarily watching it the whole time as we play together and do other stuff but the tele is always on and it is usually cbeebies it is tuned into.
I work from home and try to do the majority of my work in the mornings when my son is at school, which means my daughter has to amuse herself as best she can while I work. Cbeebies comes into its own then. I have found my son has just started to say that cbeebies is boring so I think we may need to progress to cbbc for him, which is the BBC's version of kids TV for slightly older children.
Anyway back to cbeebies. They have a good selection of programmes on from 6.30am to 7p.m on the sky cbeebies channel (617), however they are repeated three times from 6.30am to 6pm in blocks. From 6pm to 7pm is the bedtime hour, which is a bit more calming and not so excitable.
My daughters personal favourites are Come Outside, (she absolutely loves Aunty Mabel and Pippin. Brum is a favourite too (the little car who saves the town), Something Special with Justin from Tikabilla. Also she really loves Higgledy House in Tikabilla and sometimes Boogie Beebies.
I find the programmes she likes are on the whole quite educational, especially Come Outside and she has learnt lots of songs from this.
I find the trouble with Cbeebies is that it is to cater for all pre school children and as any parent knows there is a big difference between what a 6 month old likes and what a 2 year old likes. Therefore I think the Fimbles for instance is boring to my daughter as it is too young now.
The programme line up changes slightly at the weekend and some other good programmes come on that my son likes, like Barnaby Bear for instance. I have heard him say things that I didn't realise he knew which he has learnt from this programme.
In between programmes it is hosted by the cbeebies friends, who are a group of 5 adults who show you how to make things, sing songs and dance and tell stories. My favourites are Chris and Sue. They also look after 2 rabbits called Beebie and Bracken and you often get a bedtime story based on these rabbits.
Cbeebies also has a website:
My son loves this site. He sits on the computer and plays for ages on it by himself. He is getting adept at the mouse and can easily print things for himself too. I was quite proud when he got into this as keyboard and mouse skills don't come easy to everyone so for him to settle into it at an early age was great. The website is brill and the homepage shows a thumbnail of all the characters on cbeebies, whether they are currently showing or not. You just click on the character you want to go to and up comes a whole page dedicated to them. You can do games, send e cards, print and colour or listen to songs and stories. I would really recommend the site 100%. My daughter loves it too but can't do the mouse yet so she sits next to her brother and hits the keyboard. Frustrating for all!!
Also if you have sky digital you can press the red button while on channel 617 and up will come a few games to play on the TV with the remote control. The games are all based on the coloured buttons on your remote and are fairly easy to control, although if your child can't read they are hard to figure out. I don't use this much as it takes ages to load and if your child pushes back up on the remote by accident it takes ages to get back in again!!
Summary of my review is that cbeebies is worth watching, although the repeats do get on the adults nerves but then it's not meant for us is it!
Hope you enjoyed.
Summary: Good clean kids fun
