Advantages: Easy to Use & nostalgic
Disadvantages: The wait for pages to change
Ceefax is an information system which can be accessed by tuning to any of the BBC's analogue channels and pressing the 'text' button on the remote.
The service was first 'broadcast' in 1974 when it only featured thirty pages. Nowadays it includes a wide variety of information, and still is my primary source for finding out sport results.
The new digital text service is both quicker and more polished, but I prefer the old-skool version ten-fold. I know where everything is and although you have to wait for pages to change - it does everything I need it to. I suppose it's an example of 'if it's ain't broke then don't fix it'.
I will be quite upset when the age old information service ends at the 'digital switchover' - I hope there will be someway to still access it.
I do have fond memories of Ceefax - one particular story occurred during my schooldays when I remember telling a gullible friend that if you pressed the 1 + 2 buttons simultaneously on the remote control, you could create an 'x', and entering 3 x's would result in gaining access to the 'Ceefax pornographic pages'. Apparently he was trying to do it for hours... lol.
Anyway, despite it's dated appearance, Ceefax is a British treasure, and an excellent source of information.
Summary: Superb Concept
