Advantages: A wide variety of programmes to pick from that entertain and teach

Disadvantages: Adverts!

I am not a person who watches a lot of TV, I prefer to spend my time online, listening to music or reading books but when I am watching it I do spend a lot of the time watching Channel 4.

Channel 4 first started transmitting 2 November 1982 and its target audience is varied with programmes suited for viewers of all ages with school programmes, documentaries, cookery and reality shows, comedies and films all being shown on the channel and of course its soap opera Hollyoaks.

The channel transmits 24 hours a day and is a commercial channel using advertising to boost its earnings.

It has a wide variety of UK and US programming, cult hits for channel 4 from the UK include Come Dine With Me, Countdown and Peep Show whilst it shows high quality US programmes including Desperate Housewives, E.R, The Simpsons and was the first UK channel to broadcast Lost before losing it to Sky.

Channel 4 are not shy with the documentaries they use with factual programmes on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars over recent years, shows on sexual issues and orientations and stunned the viewers with the first televised autopsy carried out by Dr. Gunther von Hagens.

Channel 4 has spawned several channels which all connect, these are E4, Film4, More 4, 4Music and Channel 4 Plus One.

These additional channels concentrate specifically on one area which Channel 4 currently broadcasts programmes on.

You can also watch Channel 4 online or via Virgin Media by using the 4OD (four on demand) service which is great for catching up with programmes that you may have missed if you do not have a facility to record straight from your TV and you can watch programmes on this up to 30 days after they have aired on the television.

I would be very sad if this channel was ever to go as its highly entertaining and a great source of knowledge too, your bound to find something on this channel to suit your tastes.

Summary: One I have watched for years and will carry on for many years to come

I like Channel 4's edginess, but I do think they should drop the whole Big Brother thing now, it has really had its day.
