Advantages: great shows

Disadvantages: ads

Channel 4 is the bad-boy of free TV (or at least in my view). It's always had a reputation for showing the rudest and crudest of TV, and that's made it a firm favourite for teens everywhere.

Channel 4 has been around since the 80s, and its current remit for programming is as follows:

demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes; appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society; makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and exhibits a distinctive character.

This really sums it all up, as the channel is famed for innovative and brave programming which sometimes works but sometimes doesn't. Shows like Big Brother took big risks, which some people feel payed off.
For me, the channel is best for its programming of top American TV such as Friends. Especially in the school breaks, you could always rely on the channel to play episode after episode of my favourite comedy!

Top UK shows on the channel include Grand Designs and the work of Gordon Ramsay, particularly Kitchen Nightmares. To me, Channel 4 is adept at taking the most talented British TV stars and showing their programmes. This is a real achievement when you consider the BBC can pay more than them, and I think a lot of it has to do with the cool, young person image associated with the channel.

Of course, 4 is one of those channels that has adverts every 15 mins or so, and this can be really draining. My advice is to watch the programmes on the OD player online, where the ads are cut out!

All in all, a brilliant channel that contains a lot of adult programming.
