Channel 4 is one of the current 5 major terrestrial channels that are broadcasted on UK television screens. The channel first came to UK screens in 1982. The station is funded with adverts which are shown during and in between programmes but it is actually publicly owned by the Channel Four Television Corporation. The channel was initially established to provide a rival to the BBC and ITV stations in order to get new and diverse programmes on UK screens. The channel has a remit and has certain public service obligations it has to fulfil in terms of it's programming. This means it has to broadcast programmes which are diverse in nature and cater to a wide range of tastes and also have programmes that are educational and ones which are creative and innovative.
The channel has a number of different styles of programme which help it to cater to different people. These include the likes of news, documentaries , drama programmes, entertainment programmes and also game shows.
I don't really watch channel 4 during the daytime but some of the most popular programmes during the day include the game shows Countdown and Deal or no deal. I do watch Deal or no deal from time to time and it is still quite a good show and is made popular and helped by having a decent host in Noel and also the different characters that go on the show.
There are then programmes such as Come dine with me which is also currently quite popular. Other shows I have watched or do watch include the likes of Skins, Desperate Housewives, Big Bang Theory, friends, Secret Millionnaire and Fonejacker. Another popular show was Big Brother which has declined in more recent years. There are fashion and beauty shows for those who like that kind of thing with the likes of How to look good naked and 10 years younger. There are cooking shows with Jamie Oliver and also Gordan Ramsey as well as home shows such as location, location, location as well as many others. The news coverage on the channel is also pretty decent. The only type of show which I am a fan of that it doesn't really cover is sport but I guess this is covered in other channels.
Channel 4 is a pretty good channel and has a good range of shows which caters to different tastes. It appeals to quite a wide demographic with the wide range of programmes on offer. I think in terms of programmes on offer and ones that are interesting and popular then it is probably better than those on the BBC and ITV. Those channels may have some good programmes but Channel 4 probably has more that are interesting and watchable. Overall I would give it 4/5 stars.
Summary: pretty good tv channel
