Advantages: more things to watch!!!!
Disadvantages: nothing that you would want to!!!
Channel 5 has been much maligned since its release in 1997. We had the problem with video tuning, the poor reception, the numerous other problem and at the end of it all we get a rather good television station...NOT! It was obvious from the amount of trash turned out by Channel 4 and BBC2 that there simply wasn't enough decent programming around to make another station viable in this country. Channel 5 is the perfect testament to this fact, churning out a whole day load of...nothing. Most of their programming can be described as non-descript, the rest just plain tacky. No station in its right mind would have revived 'Its A Knockout' as a game show...and then put Keith Chegwin in as its presenter to round things off - no one except Channel 5. No other station would have even considered devoting a week to naturism(or some other excuse to have everyone stripped) and shown every regular program with naked presenters and contestants. No station would devote so much of its programming time to cheap and tacky sexually orientated programmes...not even Channel 4. These programs do not even titilate because they are so poor, thus missing the point entirely. I realise that the station is strapped for cash most of the time but is this really an excuse for displaying such rubbish all of the time? Where Channel 4 seems to have Countdown as its flagship program(oh dear), Channel 5 seems to be following suit with ther 100% quiz. This is actually watchable - although not good - but is sometimes on 3 or 4 times a day! 100% Hollywood, 100% Women, 100% Sex(surprise?), the list is endless...and monotonous. Please let there not be a Channel 6. Channel 4 has been bad enough over the years, occasionally coming up with some gems - more and more frequently now, but Channel 5 just seems to sink lower and lower until one wonders if there are no depths to which it will not sink. I wonder if they will be around for much longer as they durely can
not continue with the rubbish they produce...

- 04/11/00 There won't be a channel 6 because there isn't room on the terrestrial transmitters. I agree with your opinion to a certain degree, but Channel 5 does have some absolute gems occasionally. Mind you, The House Doctor and Sunset Beach (although this has ended now) are about the only two I can think of! |
