Advantages: Excellent movies, relaxed censorship
Disadvantages: Daytime, often cheesy
When Channel 5 started a few years back, it didnt take it long to become the laughing stock of television, it was always the butt of comedians and other T.V shows. Well as far as I am aware they have sorted out their transmission problems and is available to most of the country now. Since the start of the new year though things have taken a great leap forward. In the last few weeks Channel 5 has shown the network premiere of 'The Rock', 'U.S Marshalls' and 'Starship Troopers'. As far as I can recall the other terrestial channels havent shown one half decent movie on a weekday. These films are being shown in virtually they intended state with not too much removed. The only argument I have with Channel 5 showing these films is the advert breaks and the news break at 10pm this interupts the viewing. Channel 5 usually keep these premiere movies for a Tueday but the rest of the week they usually show old classics or just general T.V movies, in my opinions these are generally better than the dire Docu-soaps and drama's that are on the other 4 channels. I actually prefer also watching 5's news breaks aswell as they are generally brief, but informative, and also give a good sport coverage compared to some of the other channels. The day time viewing of channel 5 isn't up to much, but then again neither are any other channels. This suits me fine being at work all day. Another bonus for 5 is the sporting rights that they are acquiring. In recent time both England and Scotland international soccer games have been aired along with English and Scottish teams participation in the UEFA cup competition. All in all I think Channel 5 have geared themself's towards the twentysomething age group who are interested in watching Blockbuster movies mid-week rather than weekends, where they are often enjoying a night out, live sporting action. Along with informative news cast but not over
erly long dull news. All this rolled up in relaxed and light mannered way makes 5 my usual night viewing durig the week
