Advantages: It does have some shows of the highest quality.

Disadvantages: Yes, it is mostly full of American trash and late night movies.

I happen to agree that Channel 5 is mostly a load of rubbish full of the most unlikely programmes available. However such shows as The Mole (a personal favourite of mine which unfourtunately has only one episode left to go until the series finishes. Please bring it back for a new series Mr. or Mrs. Channel 5) at 8 on a Friday evening give the normal schedule a much needed boost of entertainment. Quiz shows such as the off beat relaxed One to Win are also good for just relaxing.
By the way, Channel 5 movies genrally have the rating of not to be watched if they start after 9pm as they are almost all terrible unless that is what you like to watch. The news is o.k if you want it in brief but detail is not an option.
Overall you soon learn what's hot and what's not and wil adopt your own personal favourites as time goes by.
