Advantages: some good stuff
Disadvantages: not enough of old classics, too many American Sitcoms
Well this opinion I fear will not make me anybody's favourite, but I just have to say it. I was very disappointed when we subscribed to the Disney Channel. We have 4 children aged 2, 3, 5, 7 and thought that this channel would be a great investment, but both my hubby and myself felt greatly let down. Having grown up with a lot of Disney, I thought we'd be subscribing to a lot of wholesome family entertainment, but don't feel that this is what we got. Call me old fashioned, or even a prude if you want, but hey that's just the way I am!! I was expecting to see a lot of the disney movies, with probably a lot of repetition, which I didn't mind, as kids seem to watch videos over an over anyway. The great Disney movies, Mickey, Donald and heaps of the great Disney cartoons, which were all harmless and had good family values. But instead we saw a lot of American sitcoms, with behaviour and language that wasn't offensive but not what I would call a great example for how we want our kids to grow up. I must admit, that for teenagers and young adults this channel would probably be excellent, but not for kids as young as ours. Now you may well disagree with this, and I am expecting that a lot of you will, but is there anything wrong with wanting to bring up my children with a lot of the old fashioned values, of speaking politely, respecting your elders, not answering back...and the list goes on.... Perhaps I'm not realistic with hoping that some of these values will rub off on our kids, but I can only hope can't I?? Well this is only short, but I had to say it. If you can suggest any channels for kids under 8, then that would be great. I hate things like Power Rangers, Pokemon, Buffy, Transformers etc which seem to promote violence, and forget American Sitcoms with the sarcastic children disrespecting their parents. I just want some wholesome childrens entertainment, which I really don't fe
el the Disney Channel provided for kids as young as ours. Thanks for reading!

- 05/05/09 Perhaps try Playhouse Disney, or look online for a TV guide of whats on the various kids channels :) that will help you find something which you want to watch, but alot of the kids channels have presenter type shows, and not the kind which I think you are talking about. Old fashioned TV shows tend to have been thrown to the wall. |

- 05/05/09 I agree! There is "playhouse disney" but this tends to be "too young" and more like Ceebeebies type programmes and if your anything like me, they just get VERY annoying. I hate programmes with stupid patronising presenters. I think there should be a "middle" disney, for kids aged around 5-10, as you say the Disney Channel as it is, is much for teenagers and young adults.
I also think Disney Channel should have the Oringinals...Beauty and The Beast, Dumbo, Bambi, The Lion King etc!!! EVen Cinemagic which is supposedly the film channel for Disney, these are not the films which are shown!!! Sacrilidge it is that these films tend to be fazed out!!!! |

- 19/12/01 I agree with you I would have expected Disney films and cartoons with real values to teach the children, Susan |
