Whether or not you would like euronews comes down greatly to the style of news broadcasting you are attracted to and the range of news which you are interested in. Where euronews breaks decisively with other news channels is that it provides a far more balanced coverage of world events than other channels. Although undeniably euro-centric, it nevertheless manages to touch upon world events, flashpoints and areas of dispute across the world, often doing so before they turn into major events. Whereas other news channels make up for this lack of coverage with then extensive if not exclusive reporting on an issue, euronews manages to briefly sum of the news and then move onto other affairs, keeping it a step ahead of the other channels.
On the negative side, there are less hard hitting interviews and in depth analysis compared to other channels and if you come from a particular country you will not get an analysis of how these international events impact on your own country in detail, but rather a more holistic and broad analysis. Although I can only speak from my own experiences with Virgin Media, you can also receive the channel in French, Spanish and German, so if you want to brush up on your language skills or are not a native speaker it is an ideal choice.
For UK viewers, euronews acts as an ideal balancing agent to the coverage of world events by UK news corporations which can sometimes be exceedingly narrow, it will give you a wider range of subjects and will keep you up-to-date with events developing around the world which are not headlines in the UK but which often have the potential to become so.
Possibly the most under-rated and little talked about news channel, this one, for me, is up there with Sky News and BBC for quality. Euronews can be found with the plethora of news channels on Sky Digital and is often overlooked as being bland and repetative. Far from it, this channel is a little gem.
I first discovered Euronews when studying for an A-level in French. This channel was instrumental in helping me pass that A-level. You can change the commenatary of the channel into various languages including French and Spanish. They are rolling out new languages all the time, including Porteguese and Russian.
There is no visible presenter at all on Euronews, just commentary - something some won't like. Many viewers like a more personable approach to news delivery with a "friendly face" reading it. However, for no-nonsense news with little distraction from studio designs, flashy graphics and non-sensical presenters, this is the channel for you. It is unbiased, stadily delivered and, unlike Sky News, the "World" news actually is "world" news - and not the UK and US news.
The news itself is fantastic - in depth and intelligent with stories you will not necessarily see on other channels like Sky and BBC. It is delivered in a matter-of-fact way, without the need to add hype or any other emotion. The "no comment" section achieves this to no end - allowing the audience to see the news without any distractions from presenters or graphics. The lack of graphics (an utter blessing in this on-screen graphic age) work well and allow viewers to consume the news and not an endless supply of whoosing breaking news banners.
In light of the events since 11th September, most of us would have to have cut ourselves off from the media totally not to be able to answer that question. I first encountered Euro News back in the heady days of Cable-Tel BEFORE they taken over by NTL at which point they chose to get rid of it. I was heartbroken, having elected to study subjects with a European/Worldwide focus during my HND (yes tell me to get a life if you want, Ciao wasn't around then!) - so imagine my joy and pleasure on August 24th, when flicking through my newly installed Sky Dish to discover that EuroNews had taken up residence on Channel 528 of Sky Digital. So what do you get for your pennies? - Um, News!!! For those who haven't encountered it, it is a a free to air rolling 24 hour news service broadcast in English in the UK, although I understand it is also broadcast in other European Languages (web-site suggests German, Italian, French, Portoguese, Italian and Russian) and runs to CET. The channel is supported by its web-site "www.euronews.net" in the same choice of languages. SO WHAT MAKES THIS CHANNEL SO DIFFERENT? Well, like most of its digital news counterparts it runs the full news every hour, with a headline update on the half hour; but in contrast to many other channels Euronews really does cover ALL world events, broadcasting things you will NEVER see on either mainstream channels or news channels such as News 24, Sky News and CNN - Euronews also offers: * No Visible TV Presenter * Sport news (from footie to basketball, cricket and some more obscure (very) sporting events) and all traditional sports including football league news from around the UK and Europe; * Major Arts & Music Events throughout Europe; * Interviews with major film stars & Artists * Major Fashion, Music and Film Events and Reviews; * New Film Reviews and interviews with the stars; * Financial Updates on markets and Reviews; * Every couple of hours it has a slot called 'Perspective' that reports from TV channels throughout Europe, with translation into the appropriate language; * Euronews covers in real time the weather hourly for every region of Europe and Asia, * And the most compelling part of the channel is No-Comment - that selects a few roles of film from events (usually political) that have been going on in the world, and broadcasts them with natural recorded sound and no commentary - in the last few weeks, these have been limited primarily to events and the subsequent after-effects surrounding 11th September. Euronews (for me at least) goes a long way to providing unbiased reporting on events, not just the major ones, that go on both around us in our daily lives and also with a much wider remit, and if you are fed up with the rolling predictableness of some of its counterparts, try it out and see for yourself - Channel 528, Sky Digital Some of the pointers below were not really relevant to this channel. With so many news channels available you may be forgiven for thinking that they are all the same. This simply isn't true however- and EuroNews is more different than most. HOW TO GET IT Sadly, not available on Sky Digital or ON Digital- most of the UK cannot recieve the channel any more, it used to be broadcast on Eutelsat Hot Bird (13 degrees)- but even that service has now gone. At the moment, as far as I know- the only way to recieve it is via German digital satellite services- and I think it might not be free any more. Why review it then you ask! I have recently read that it will soon be coming to the Sky Digital Platform (I read this on another site- I could be wrong)! You can also watch it over the net (using Real Player @ www.euronews.net). WHY DIFFERENT? EuroNews provides a very European perspective on news- something that makes a nice change from either the 'little Britain' perspective, or the American-CNN perspective. The programmes are all very well put together, and their features are also interesting- such as those on European culture. Their weathers for across Europe are the best international weathers I know of. Finally, the programmes, headers and intros/ outros are done with much more style than most of the competition. ANYTHING ELSE? EuroNews is available in almost every language under the sun, and being available on the web, in most European hotels, and soon on Sky Digital (I think)- it is extremely acessible. Overall this channel is far better than CNN, ITN News Channel (although EuroNews is ITN), and Sky News in my opinion. With this and BBC News24/ World- I wouldn't want anything else. If you get the chance- have a look at it!
I used to receive Euro News but it has gone of the ntl analogue service and it’s not available on ntl digital. Euro News was news mainly for Europe and it reminded me off CNN. To be blunt the channel was extremely boring. I didn’t like the channel because I didn’t think it made the news interesting and it heavily looked at the news outside Britain and not much news was given for the UK. The channel was available not so long ago on Channel 5 in the early hours of the morning but now its gone from there as well. It’s not widely available and really it’s not a channel I’m pining after. Its yet another news channel, if you’re interested in news issues that occur in Europe it may be useful but I found the channel to be very monotonous and simply very boring.
