Advantages: free
Disadvantages: need a strong aerial signal
now that the digital switch over is looming most people have already either subscribed to sky, virgin media or brought a freeview box.
We already have virgin media in our living room on the tv down there but I wanted something in my bedroom, I didnt want to have to pay a monthly subscription to a company so opted to get freeview, I brought a freeview box from asda for £19.99 which advertised it would allow a normal tv to have upto 58 extra channels, there is a number to phone to see if you have a good signal in your area before buying so I phoned to find we had a brilliant reception level here in the midlands but I was not surprised at that after all the albion ground is the highest above sea level.
Anyway, I brought my box and plugged it into my tv, nothing worked it wouldnt pick up any channels, I phoned the company and they told me I needed to get a signal booster as I was using it on an indoor aerial, off to argos I went and payed £20 for a signal booster, it got me 3 extra channels.
After that I decided that seen as we have virgin media in the living room and the old aerial on the roof was no longer being used I would take it out of the living room and run it to my bedroom, this worked and I got all the extra channels which is great so now I am spoilt for choice of what to watch.
I wouldnt recomend freeview to anyone with an indoor aerial as the recepion is very poor but if you have an out door areal it is great.
Summary: a great idea if you have a good aerial
