Advantages: Regular schedules, Some quality US shows
Disadvantages: Some not-so-great programmes
This is channel that I didn’t realise I subscribed to for ages – and in fact it seems to be a permanent part of my package with ntl. (i.e. the basic package with no extra payments for TV channels). I’ve been receiving it for well over a year. It way because it was so high up the list, at number 914, that I never really saw it much in the early days. But now FTN is on my “Favourites” list, and the main reasons are: 9.00 – 10.00 pm (Monday to Friday; 8.00 – 9.00 pm Saturday and Sunday) Ricki – Ricki Lake remains one of the best hosts of this kind of show, in my opinion. Not as sensational as some, and she’s always well-grounded (especially since having her kids) – not the most up to date series, but still worth seeing. 10.00 – 11.00 pm (every night) Tonight Show with Jay Leno – good late-night talk show, showing the day after it airs in the USA. Great for keeping up with music and movie stars who don’t always make it across the pond. I usually miss out the first 15 minutes of comedy and comment on the latest in the US news, because unless it’s about Arnie becoming governor or something, it’s about news events or personalities that we haven’t even heard about over here in the UK. Other highlights for me include – Dilbert (7.30 - 8.00 pm Monday to Friday) – the office worker comic strip brought to life. Bob and Margaret (7.00 – 7.30 pm Monday to Friday) – another cartoon, about a London chiropodist and his wife. Of course, there’s plenty of dross on there, too – Mission Paintball is fine if you like that kind of thing (I don’t), and I’ve had more than enough of programmes like Fancy Me Island (to sum up – young show-offs holiday in the sun, trying to get off with one another) FTN doesn’t broadcast in the daytime – programmes start at 6.
00 pm. As usual with cable channels there's lots of advertising. The way I look at it is - it's a free channel, and on that basis it's not bad value at all. If you already have cable TV, check it out – FTN is definitely worth looking at in the late evening – as long as you don’t mind the US bias at that time of night.

- 16/10/03 Don't think that I've seen this, but I don't think it sounds as if this has anything new to offer... |
