Ok.... I'll cut straight to the chase, on the whole this is bad TV! oh and also, I'm a Christian... I am not some atheistic anti-Christian worldly heretic who is sat in the middle of a five-pointed-star as I write this. I am a Church goer, I read the Bible, I pray, I've even been overseas to work with a missionary... So why do I think this is on the whole, bad TV? Well along with being a Christian, I'm also a Journalist, I work in this industry and apart from the fact that over-the top (usually American) preachers even make this Church goer cringe, I genuinely do not see programming which is of quality or substance. Programme making IS about carrying a message or stimulating an audience but it IS NOT supposed to be one-sided, see through, shallow over marketed propaganda. On the whole, thats what I am seeing on Christian Television full stop. Its a shame too because I do believe what I read in the Bible, I do think that there is a Heaven and a Hell and more importantly, History really demands me to believe in Jesus Christ who was Definitely Crucified and his body definitely went missing.... I happen to believe he rose from the dead but I didn't reach any of these conclusions by watching Christian TV, Maybe its just as well because that would mean at the very least, I'd be broke. Christian TV really is failing to do its job, the reason is because its far too preachy, pushy and over the top, always trying to subliminally 'convert' its audience (or fleece them) it usually does more harm than good. I couldn't just leave my op here however. I do need to try to say how I think it could be better and maybe comment on what I'd like to see... Christianity does have a part to play (especially in western society and culture) and I think that quality television could cater for both those who may label themselves as Christian and those who may not. Providing the programming
is fair and of good editorial content, most people (even the atheists) would watch and may become engaged by what they see and thats what good programming is all about, a connection. At the moment, Christian TV does not connect with many, I hope and dare I say it, Pray that that changes one day.

- 28/06/03 I agree with you Whitehorse. Beliefs are fundamentally based on choices and anything which allows people to make educated and informed choices should be encouraged.
I think that as a Christian Broadcaster, GOD TV or any of the other religious channels only harm themselves by excluding opinions or views that don't match their own. I fact, it makes Christianity look weak and helpless.
I also agree that Paganism often loses out in religious debate robbing many of the opportunity to explore not just the world around us, but themselves too. |

- 28/06/03 I'll be the one sat in the middle of a five-pointed star then *points to the witch Whitehorse*
From what I've seen of this lot it makes wonder how anyone can take it seriously - more scary if they do. It would be nice to see a channel that embraces spirituality in general, embracing and exploring or religions and paths, including Paganism. |
