Advantages: Has the odd good programme

Disadvantages: Reality rubbish, poor local news

ITV 1 is the main rival to BBC One, as is a channel that is purely funded by the advertising revenue. ITV was traditionally made up of regional networks that made up the franchise, previously the part of the network that serviced where I live, Wales, was HTV Wales. Since the integration of the services, the local networks have been integrated in to ITV 1, although Wales still kept the tag, ITV 1 Wales.

ITV 1 is very much like its rival BBC One, in that it is the main channel of the network and main shows the networks highest rating shows, although the channel does not focus on one particular programme, but has a wide variety.

In terms of the morning schedule it is very predictable, in that it shows GMTV, The Jeremy Kyle Show and then This Morning. What this means that the morning schedule is very celebrity obsessed and showing the worst of Britain. Which in my opinion, is not exactly best, because as a bloke, I am not really interested in what a women wore to some even; as what both GMTV and This Morning both do.

In terms of the afternoon schedule it includes the ITV News , Loose Women, the Real Deal and one or two cooking programmes. While it gets better in late afternoon with the Real Deal and some of the cooking programmes, the ITV News could best be described as a poor version of the BBC News; and I cannot stand Loose Women, as it is nothing more than a load of has beens talking about their lives.

In terms of the evening, the early part is almost always dominated by soap operas, Coronation Street and Emmerdale, while later there is usually a drama programmes followed by the news, although sometimes movies are show. As I am a person that is not interested in Soaps, I usually do not watch ITV 1 in the early part of the evening, which means that there has to be something of interest to draw my attention back to the channel, but lately what I have found is, there is not a lot that really interests me.

One rally big problem that I have with the channel is that on the odd occasion when a film is show, they tend to show the news right in the middle of the movie, which is a real pain. As it spoils the mood of the movie that you are watching: which means that either you just turn over half way through the movie as I cannot be bothered watching any more due to the interruption or just not watch the movie from the beginning at all.

One major problem that I have with the channel is that ITV 1 has moved away from making good drama in recent years to making 'reality tv shows'. In the beginning, these show such as Britain's Got Talent and the X Factor were original, but after them being show so many times they have become repetitive and the same over and over again.

Overall while I do like the odd programme on ITV 1 I just don't find the channel as interesting as it use to be; so I can see why the channel and the brand are in trouble, as people like me, that use to watch programmes on the channel are turning off, as there is nothing new on the channel, either it has been in the channel and has become repetitive or has copied an idea from another channel but has done it poorly. Therefore I would not recommend the channel as one of the best, although there can sometimes be the odd programme that I like, such as Doc Martin. So I would recommend having a look at the guide to see what you like.

Summary: Not one I would recommend

The reason they have moved away from drama to "reality" nonsense is that the latter is much cheaper to make relative to the audience it secures, and with their ad revenues dramatically down they can no longer afford prestige gestures.

What irritates me is that a programme can often start a few minutes BEFORE the scheduled time.

The news in the middle of films really annoys me too!

Great review.
