Advantages: good for teens
Disadvantages: not so good for older viewers
Back in the day, MTV was all about music videos, but today it's more focused on reality TV. Whilst the majority of viewers warmed to this, there were still plenty of people who liked non-stop music vids, and that birthed MTV2. Funnily enough, this channel now features other programming too, but there is a higher percentage related to music videos than on MTV.
I like music videos, but I can see how some people won't. To me, half the beauty of a song is the story it tells, and as the budgets for videos goes up and up, there's a sense of anticipation with each release. At times like this, I can't help but mourn Michael Jackson, whose music vids were world-class. Sadly, there's a current trend to produce music videos that lack a story, such as Alexandra Burke's 'Bad Boys' song. A leather clad Alexandra breaks down and is surrounded by men. Oh, and if the leather look doesn't do it for you, then you've got a second sequence where her breasts are pushed up like some Pride and Prejudice extra.
I have to say that music videos that have no story, just semi-naked women in them seem to make up a big percentage of the channel's coverage and do very little for me.
As well as music videos, there are some very interested music related specials on the show. Interviews with stars, or biographical documentaries offer the chance to learn something you never knew.
It seems that the MTV crew always get a range of top celebs to take place in these documentaries, which is always interesting. The target audience of the channel is those in their teens and early twenties, and the music choices really do show this. It's pretty much all chart music, which right now seems to revolve around garage tinged pop. If that's your cup of tea then great, but if you're more of an old-school music fan, then this might not be the best channel for you.
All in all, a good channel that has a limited target audience, but if you fall into that bracket with your interests then it's ideal.
Summary: do it
