Advantages: Good Music, Just Music

Disadvantages: Zane Lowe

If you subscribe to Sky Digital you'll no doubt be aware that the package comes with an abundance of music channels. Most of them cater towards the mainstream with the pathetic likes of Gareth Gates murdering classic elvis songs while the Cheeky Girls demand you touch their bum because "it is life!". Thankfully there is still music out there that uses real instruments and thankfully still rocks. It's alternative because it's the only real alternative to killing music altogether.

That's where MTV2 comes in, it's a 24 hour channel dedicated to bringing you the best rock, dance and alternative music. The channel gives you the usual generation X attitude that you've come to expect from MTV without all the silly american influenced social issues that should be left out of a music channel, it also doesn't show 'The Real World' and believe me that's a very good thing.

Music video's make up the majority of the programming with the latest videos from the likes of Nirvana and the Foo Fighters all making their first appearances on the channel. However you also get an abundance of live shows from some top bands like The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Queens of the Stone Age. Most of the time these are pretty raw shows and as close to the real as you can get without buying a ticket. On the odd occasion you also get candid interviews with artists. Most are conducted by Zane Low (I think that's his name), the man comes across as slightly annoying and full of himself. Is it an australian accent, is it slightly irish, does he put it on to sound slightly cool. I don't know but his interview techniques aren't and he generally gets some good anecdotes from bands as a result.

The highlight of the channel for me is the brief interludes from a lounge singer who takes on some of the modern music and gives it a relaxed acoustic spin, it's very cheesy but also very cool at the same time. MTV2 is a ch
annel that is exactly what you'd expect a music channel to be. One that plays proper music without all the bull and puff pieces. For that we can be thankful........Rock and Roll.
