Advantages: Live Shows/great music, Comic, lack of advertisements
Disadvantages: Occasional swearing, Hyping up the discussion boards
I'm a big fan of alternative music, not the screaming world of Kerrang (although I often appreciate that too) but a mixture of soft Coldplay and Feeder, some punk such as Something Corporate and Blink 182 and the heavier nu metal stuff such as Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. So Naturally MTV2 appeals to me far more than the advert heavy Kerrang. The music MTV2 play normally cater to my taste, I often get a song I don't like but that is a natural problem with all the music channels, you won't like them all. The nice bar that appears in the corner is far more professional than the tapped on (occasionally) of P-Rock and even the now pink Kerrang ones. I'm also a bit of a fan of Gonzo, his live couch chat is often funny and his ability to play with the camera crew is often hilarious. The only criticism is that he swears so much that it often doesn't get blanked out, and he'll have to be careful that man. One of the biggest praises I must deliver to MTV2 is regarding the adverts, on Kerrang you can go about 3 songs and then be forced to endure a 6 minute Advert break. MTV2 do show self-advertisement breaks BUT they are infrequent and very very short. Adverts starring Siffle and Ollie (the ever so strange socks) are a joy to watch especially when they break into a rap about whatever springs to mind (Star Wars was the topic the other day I believe). The recent obscure adverts for Mr. Snaffleburger the small head who is forced to hypnotise kids to "Conform, Consume and Obey" has me in stiches every time. There are some annoyances, the desire to hype their website is one. A way in which they do this is by promising the public that they'll stick up quotes from their discussion board if they visit it. And they often do, and nine times out of ten they are pointless quotes although occasionally you get a humerous one. This happens all the time and although it was ok to start with it is becoming increasingly frustrati
ng as time goes on. MTV2's live music shows are absolutley excellent (I was watching Hell is for Hero's the other day, an excellent start to their Resurocktion of live music). They often show music first (including Feeder's new song Forget About Tomorrow) and they show live shows that don't exist on any other music channel. Their "Linkin Park days" etc... are far better than Kerrangs. The latter offers a day where all their videos are up for selection whilst MTV2 do that but show documentaries and live shows (sch as the $2billion concert) which Kerrang cannot. MTV2 is a diverse alternative music channel, and a well put together programme. Dringo.

- 29/04/03 MTV2 used to be so good, with 2-eclectic and a varied playlist. Now it's just Jackass, unfunny phrases flashing up every 2 seconds, and nu-metal crap. Wish it went back to the old days... |

- 19/04/03 My favourite bit is Gonzo, and I usually prefer MTV2 music to Kerrangs aswell. |

- 19/04/03 Good review - I don't watch MTV2 all that often, but when I do it's usually ok... have to admit to preferring the music on Kerrang and Q (though the adverts get VERY annoying). |
