Advantages: Much more choice.

Disadvantages: The same show can be on different channels in quick succession.

I remember when MTV used to play music videos. It seems daft but a tv channel which is called music television plays hardly any nowdays. They seem to focus alot more on pointless tv 'dramas' or reality tv rubbish. Take 'The Hills' or 'Kerry Katona: Crazy In Love' as perfect examples of both.

What used to be just one channel, MTV, has now been broken down and re-branded into alot more channels:

MTV One - The main channel. This shows some music videos but mostly broadcasts MTV's series.
MTV One +1 - this is just MTV One but shown an hour later.
MTV Two - this channel focuses mainly indie and rock music and shows.
MTV Hits - this channel shows popular music videos pretty much non-stop.
MTV Base - focuses on Hip Hop and r&b music and shows.
MTV Dance - this plays dance music videos.
MTV Ⓡ - this shows MTV's reality tv shows only.

What used to be one channel is now seven. This is good because you now can pick and choose the channel which suits your musical tastes. I find myself watching MTV Base alot more than any of the others because they play music that I like. When all that was available was MTV, I used to watch for an hour and like two or possible three songs. Thats no good. In a society where selection is king, you need to have as many choices as possible. MTV have done well but I do sometimes feel as if they've spread themselves far too thinly. You can often find the same programme is being broadcast on two or three channels within hours of each other. I think the people who plan the schedules need to take the other channels into consideration. Other than that, its a job well done.
