Advantages: Some of the most popular shows have been made by MTV. Jackass being one.
Disadvantages: Girls, Girls GIRLS! And no Music!!
Right. What I would like to tell you about this channel is it does exactly what it says on the tin - MUSIC... on TV.
Well, that couldnt be further from the truth.
MTV, or Music Television as is theactual name for it, is a channel that originated in the old US of A in the early 1980's, originally playing exactly what the name suggests - Music... all day... with Videos.
Fast forward to 2009, and we take a look on the TV Listings for the channel in on MTV One in the UK. My Super Sweet 16? Pimp My Ride?? The Hills??? This isnt Music! This is (dum dum daaaa!!!) REALITY TELEVISION!! Noooooo!!
As if there wasnt enough of that already, MTV decided to follow the trend, offering Reality TV to the Young Adults of this fine Country, in the bucket-load.
So does it do anything to do with music? Well, kind of. Apart from the 'Space Filler' Nightscreen of Constant Music Vids from around 2am to 6am, the channel is basically an Entertainment channel, which incorperates Comedy with Music, Reality TV with Celebrities and Pop Culture as a whole has come to recognise MTV as a universal brand. More notorious now for NOT showing music, you will hear many say, ' I remember when MTV used to show Music.' But, along with shows mentioned already, MTV still grabs the teen viewers by the scruff of the neck, and mesmirises them with quite awful shows.
I would say the majority is based on what the Girls want to watch. But, theres the odd Lads program in there. Jackass, South Park and Dirty Sanchez to name three... and possibly the only three? You lose count of the amount of female-orientated shows on here. Making the Band is another.
But, thats the MTV of today. Its a huge business now, with Films, TV Companies and all sorts, so its to be expected... but why do they still have MTV Two, which shows non-stop Rock Music, yet MTV One show little Music at all?? Surely they should stay true to what made them popular.
And its not like they havent had their controversies! Back in the late 90's/early 00's, they banned an Eminem video from their networks because they didnt agree with the content. They didnt edit it, nor did they censor it... they just banned it.
Makes you wonder where MTV's priorities lie.
You will find MTV One on Sky channel 350, and Virgin channel 311. But you wont find music... much...
Summary: Barfouriniho!!!

- 27/02/09 I totally agree! Though some of the MTV shows are quite entertaining, they do not stay true to their title! They branched out because they know where all the money is, and they have gotten more famous for it! |

- 27/02/09 MTV suffered from it's own success tbh |
