Advantages: You'll learn a lot about music

Disadvantages: Too many repeats!

MTV used to have all sorts of great musical shows on it, but now...

Well, MTV is now a network of channels:

MTV- The original, but not best, music channel. Shows like "Becoming" and "Fanatic" fill up around 3 hours of the schedule, whilst occasionally you'll get the odd repeat of "The Story of Michael Jackon, Madonna or Kylie" to fill up another few hours. The amount of repeats is ridiculous, you can expect to see the same show upto 10 times during the space of one week.
The music videos played are usually by acts like Janet Jackson and S Club 7, so it's quite disappointing. Recently, MTV UK started showing TRL Live, the popular US request show. This is quite interesting to watch, as you get a taste of what's to come in England.
"Daily Edition", is another reasonably informative pop news show, which is sadly ruined by the terrible presenter (I think her name is Edith Bowman).
There used to be some cartoons on MTV (Daria/ Bevis and Butthead), but they have just faded away over the last few years.

MTV BASE- This newer channel is based around r and b / hip hop music.
There aren't that many actual shows on MTV Base, but "The diary of" is quite often repeated.
There are many things like "Top 10 Brandy" and "Jay Z Videography" which are based solemly on one artist.
During the day, shows such as "Base Live" are always on, but again are usually repeats.
Some nights on Base they have themes (e.g. Hip Hop Night), which depending on what it's about, can be entertaining.
There is a request show, but you'll be waiting for hours to see your favourite video.

MTV HITS- All this channel does is play pop, rock and r and b music videos. For about an hour a day, you can request (sometimes using your mobile) a video, but I often get the feeling that it's fixed because the same videos are ALWAYS repeated.
On
weekends, MTV hits occasionally have themes, but they often get sidetracked (I saw Britney on the "One Hit Wonders" weekend).

MTV 2- The channel for alternative and rock music. Good if you're into the stuff, but I can't say I am. There are many shows played on the channel, but they are once again repeats. Kid Rock, Marilyn Manson and Sum 41 are regulars on this channel.

I don't quite understand if VH1 is part of MTV, I didn't think so until I saw "VH1 is part of MTV networks" at the end of a show.
Anyway, VH1 and VH1 Classic Smooth often show the same programmes as MTV, but they regulary play older music (the channel is probably more appealing to people 18+).

So, despite the terrible programme schedule, I find the MTV channels entertaining and I don't know what i'd do without them.

I agree that they show a lot of repeats, but I don't think that matters too much on a music channel.

I don't have it but it is really good in the gym.

I really love the music channels - shame I don't have anymore though! But looks they've added some since last time!

Cheers
