Advantages: Makes shopping informative, easy and a pleasure

Disadvantages: I can't think of any

I have been buying from QVC for several years now and I only have good things to say about them. QVC have been around for years and are a well established business. They sell basically anything your average department store would sell, and much more. Many people have a bad image of shopping channels and imagine cheesy presenters talking in great detail about some tat that nobody really needs. QVC is not really like that as it has a very high quality standard when it comes to the products they sell, and some of the presenters are quite likeable even, so it might be worth opening your mind. They key benefits for me are:-

1. They explain the product really well, which is really valuable. For example, my first purchase was a pair of boots. Usually, shopping online is really hit and miss, especially when it comes to shoes, but because the presenter explained that this particular pair would fit a wider foot, I knew they would be OK for me. If they are a small fit, then they will state that also. If you are looking to buy a tv, for example, it is great to sit down and watch their presentations because they will demonstrate all the functions and show you what it can do. Far better than talking to a sales person in a store who might not have enough time or the inclination to go into such detail.

2. They have an unusually generous returns policy. There is a 30 day no quibble money back guarantee, but what makes them different is that you can actually use the product and you can still send it back! Going back to the subject of shoes again, I have wasted hundreds of pounds in my lifetime buying shoes that fit OK in the store but then, for example, once I have tried to tackle that steep incline in my street they keep slipping off so I don't wear them anymore. Most shops will not let you return worn or used merchandise. You will lose your postage and packing but few shops will refund this anyway.

3. A very simple ordering procedure. I either order online or I phone the automated order line number, known as Q-Cut. Now, I have zero patience for those 'press 1 for such and such a department' phone calls but the QVC system is very efficient and you whip through everything really quickly. You can also call their freephone live order line, helpful if you have any queries. Again, very efficient and straight to the point. You can also order through your television although I haven't tried that yet.

QVC tends to have certain days devoted to promoting a certain type of product and it won't always interest you. Today for example they are promoting Honora Pearls all day, and another day it might be gold jewellery, or garden plants all day. So if none of the programmes interest you, you can go on the website and watch video clips of previous presentations of the kind of goods you are looking for.

To order from QVC you have to become a member by filling a small form in online (I am sure you can do this over the phone as well) and providing a 4 digit number as your pin. You provide your membership number and give this pin when you make an order so it prevents anybody ordering on your account without your knowledge.

I hope I have persuaded you to give it a try next time you want to buy something. Happy shopping!

Summary: Well worth checking out - you have nothing to lose
