Advantages: Reliable, has many American shows

Disadvantages: Frequent and long ad breaks.

Sky has always been one of the biggest non-terrestrial channels, and now it's available on Virgin Media again it's set to become even bigger. Generally their large budget means they win rights to show the majority of decent American TV programs, and this is pretty much where they choose to focus; Family Guy, the Simpsons, Malcom in the Middle as well as CSI and Prison Break all provide light entertainment - no serious documentaries to be found here.

Generally, the channel isn't worth watching until it reaches about 6pm; pre-primetime it's full of cheap shows and reruns. One area where Sky falls down is in adverts; as is increasingly becoming the standard, a 4 minute set is shown every 15 minutes or show - this can be particularly frustrating as a 20 minute show is often dragged out to last half an hour.

Sky One has many shows that are not shown on any other channel, making it essential viewing for those following shows such as Lost and Prison Break. Sky knows this, putting adverts for both shows on almost all of their billboards and TV ads.

If there's nothing solid on TV, Sky is always worth switching to simply because it's so reliable; no matter the time of day, there's bound to be some lightweight entertainment on to pass an hour or so.

Summary: Reliable lightweight entertainment around the clock.
