Advantages: Great home grown and import programmes

Disadvantages: Only repeats during the day

Sky One is the most recognisable channels that is associated with Sky, with its introduction when Sky first started broadcasting in the 1980s, and the channel came under the ownership of Sky as "Sky Channel" to what we know today as Sky One. Sky One or Sky1 has it has been recently rebranded, is Sky's main flagship entertainment that contains both home grown shows and US imports. Unknown to many Sky 1, in its many different forms is the fourth oldest channel in the United Kingdom, as Channel 4 arrived slightly later.

Originally Sky was a free to air channel in the 1980s but has subsequently become a scrambled channel, meaning that that a person must pay for the package that Sky1 comes under to be able to view the channel, currently the Channel is part of the Sky entertainment mix section. I believe that this channel is worth the money to view due to the high quality programmes that are shown.

The home grown programmes have only become part of the channel since the mid 1990s, with some of the most well known of these are The Dream Team, which is now decommissioned; 4400; Road Wars; the christmas special Terry Pratchets The Hog Father and for the first season, the co-financed re-imaged Battlestar Galactica.

The imported part of the scheduling of Sky 1 mainly consists of American imports that are mainly from Sky's sister network in America, the Fox network. As can be seen from the programmes such as The Simpsons, Bones, 24 and the recently purchased House MD, although imports are not restricted to the Fox Network. With Sky 1's biggest programmes of recent years coming from the Sci-Fi channel, such as Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and A Town Called Eureka.

A good feature of Sky 1 is every week the channel will show a movie, while it may not be in the same league as the Sky Movies package, it is a welcomed addition, as Sky 1 shows classic movies that everyone can recognise, such as the recently shown Predator movie.

It is for this reason that I believe that Sky 1 is one of the best channels for pure entertainment. It does not just cater for one type of interest such as sci-fi, but has a range of genres of entertainment that any person can enjoy. Therefore I believe that the cost of the channel is worth every penny. One of the caveats that I would attach to this, is while new content is shown in the evening, during the day, largely repeats are shown to fill the day. This can mean shows can become repetitive as shows can be show over and over. But this is just a minor point as I do enjoy watching my favourite shows again sometimes.

Summary: One of the greatest channels
