Advantages: good primetime viewing

Disadvantages: some bad self-produced stuff

Sky One is Sky's premier entertainment channel and is the mainstay in many peoples cable/digital package.

It's really a channel of two halves and has some great stuff that is equally matched by some bad. If you like all the cult American programmes like Buffy/Angel, Roswell, Star Trek, Dark Angel etc then you'll get to see all the new episodes first. These are the programmes that make the channels worth it and make up their primetime viewing on weekdays.

During the day it's Pokemon heaven for the kids until they go to school then the US chat shows kick in with the time shared between Jenny Jones and Sally Jesse Raphael. These shows can be quite funny as they feature the best trailer trash and rednecks the USA have to offer, often with outrageous results.

For many years The Simpsons has been the channel' strongest component, so much now that it's on every day of the week. It's good that you can always enjoy the cartoons humour over your dinner but more than often episodes are repeated within weeks of being shown. Other dinner delights include King Of The Hill, Futurama and Third Rock From The Sun.

The lowest point for the channel is the dull and pointless docu-soaps on various holiday locations as well as limp documentaries on stars and their kids etc. This is the stuff that is un-inspired and not worth your time.

Also there's a major fix of WWF Wrestling action throughout the week that kids love and if you're like me is worth watching purely for the fact that it's a hoot and not to be taken seriously.

It's a trashy entertainment channel that offers it's best stuff at primetime and whose output is safe and assured and runs like clockwork. Flick on at any given time and you're almost sure you'll know what is on.

Without the major US TV shows it has way before terrestrial television this would be a nothing channel but the chance of them losing it are very slim so long may it continue.
