Advantages: Has great potential, The Simpsons, Futurama
Disadvantages: Everything else.
Sky One is one of the main channels you get free with all Sky subscriptions, and personally, apart from The Simpsons and Futurama, I'd actually pay good money to never have to see (or hear anyone else talking about) anything else on the channel.
Everything else on Sky One is generally very boring. Programmes such as 'Buffy' and it's spinoff shows such as 'Angel' and 'Dark Angel' are really very tedious, bad drama, but with a highly attractive lead star. This is shown through most of the programming on Sky One - such as the new, pretty appaling "Is Harry On The Boat?". Tedious, badly produced tripe.
The Simpsons and Futurama get my vote as absolutely hilarious, but everything else on the channel is awful.
Which is a right shame, as it has potential to be a very good channel. Sky is succesful enough to be able to have diverse channels as part of it's repertoire. The likes of BBC 4, Discovery and the History channel provide a lot for people who prefer interesting things as to lowest common denominator drama and Jeremy Beadle-style 'ha ha ha, he fell in the water' you've-been-caught-on-candid-cam crap.
It's a shame, because television has great potential to be an absolutely amazing system for learning, education and personal advancement. The combination of video, stills, sound and information can create a fantastic learning environment. Shame it's wasted on, umm, Buffy.
If they can broadcast more specialist programming, then it will pay off in the end. Believe me, this isn't a good reason to get Sky. Meanwhile, jazz fm, BBC Four and MTV 2 are.
