Advantages: Stunning picture quality, 5.1 surround sound
Disadvantages: Small number of HD channels
Sky +HD came out a couple of years ago, offering 5.1 surround sound and picture resolution up to 4x better than normal. I didn't get Sky+ HD till a few months ago when I took up a great offer.
Because of where I work I was able to get 50% of my subscription for the first 12 months, and the box for £100 and £30 for installation.
I have a 23 inch Samsung HD TV which is good for me, because I use it for my Xbox 360 and PS3, having Sky was a bonus for me.
So once everything was installed I was ready to go, 1st impressions I was not as amazed as I thought I would be, after doing a bit of research I found out that not all programs were true HD, but up scaled from their standard definition counterparts. However some channels such as sports and documentaries are absolutely stunning, the detail is quality and the colours are vivid. I know that to get the best out of Sky+ HD I would need a bigger and more high end TV, but after a couple of months I am happy. The HD channel line up is a bit limited but very soon more channels are coming with the rest of the movie channels and Sky real Lives HD.
There have been reports of these boxes to be faulty with various problems, but I haven't experienced any yet.
The sky + function is very useful as I can record a program and watch another or I can record two programs if the box is on standby, so it is a very useful tool there. Instant rewind, pause functions are there too. Approximately 100 hours of Standard definition can be recorded or 30 hours of HD content.
The package without any discounts costs £57 at the moment for all 6 mixes, Sky Movies, sky sports and the HD content.
With a promising future, a new EPG on the way and an increase in HD line up I would recommend everyone to take the HD plunge.
Summary: Now is the time to take up High Definition
