Advantages: Great picture and big box
Disadvantages: Is it worth the extra ?
We upgraded to Sky HD about a year ago. We already had Sky and multi room and the additional cost ( the box cost circa £100 ) was around £35 per month. I am a great fan of Sky plus - the record and pause / rewind facility is so useful and easy to use. We have Sky mainly for sport ( cricket/rugby union ) so were very eager to see how HD changed that experience.
It is absolutely true that the picture is noticeably sharper ( although you very quickly get used to it and stop noticing ) With sports , particulalry something like cricket , which is slow moving , the viewing experience was definetly enhanced .
It is a luxury , especially in these hard times , but if you watch a fair bit of television , I would say it was well worth the extra cost.
Ordering and arranging installation is a doddle. Sky won't commit to the time they are going to call however and eventually turned up at 7pm on a Friday night. The poor guy still had two calls to make . It seems they are given a list for the day and have to complete it . If there is something lengthy and complicated ..... bad luck. Sky could have done much more to keep me informed as to the reasons for the delay and I wasn't overwhelmed at the eventual time because I had taken a precious days holiday .
Sky plus itself couldn't be easier to use. Bring up the menu and select. There is a good system with colour coded buttons for record, delete and the like.
One advantage of moving to HD is the larger box. Ours holds 80 hours. We have never filled it or got half way to doing so. The previous box had a capacity of only 20 hours and we kept having to delete to free up space.
HD is very good but if you are tight on cash ...I am not sure the extra quality is really worth the money. You need a very good reason ( and either sport or films are the only two I can think of ) to spend the extra.
Summary: We are glad we upgraded

- 02/03/09 What resolution HD and size TV do you use? What HD standard does Sky broadcast? What connection do you use? Do you get an HDMI cable with the Sky HD box? Does is still freeze or pixelate with snow and heavy rain? |
