Advantages: Great picture and lots of choice

Disadvantages: Bulky box

As a former customer of SKY TV for almost a decade, I decided to leave in favour of the free BT Vision service to save a few pennies. However, this was always reluctantly and the lure of now being able to utilise my HD TV through Sky HD proved to great for me and I re-joined the service earlier this year.

Sky HD is essentially SKY+ but with a few High Definition channels added to it for an extra £9.95 per month. If you are like my husband and cannot see the difference in picture quality then I recommend staying with basic Sky+, but if you can spot HD when you see it then Sky HD is most definitely worth it.

For your money you will get all the Sky+ recording and planning features but with a very special HD section in there too. This will list all the HD channels you have within your subscription and you can shoot straight to them. One thing to have in mind is that you will only get the HD channels for the packs you purchase within your subscription. For example, we pay for sports and movies so we can get the hugely impressive sports and movies HD channels. Seeing animated movies like Bee Movie in glorious high definition is a truly incredible experience.

The box itself is bulky and well designed and really gives a flavour of style and the modern aspect is clearly there. The illuminous blue rotating light and the red record light make it almost look too futuristic. The cost of the box was only £49 with a free installation as we also ordered broadband. I would also recommend using a cashback site to order Sky HD as we earned £120 just for this purchase alone.

One thing that I wasn't expecting, and is a little bit of a disappointment, is that not everything on the HD channels is in HD. An example would be Channel 4 HD, where programs like Hollyoaks and the Simpsons are listed but they are not in high definition. You can see which programs are by clicking on the information button for the program in question. From here you are looking for the HD letters in the top right of the info box.

That is just a small gripe though and I can honestly say that the picture quality and choice available is out of this world and the good thing is that, knowing Sky, this can only get better.

Summary: The best HD option out there

I notice a huge difference in Hollyoaks on normal channel 4 to channel 4 HD...and on the Simpsons too on the new series - it looks completely different. But am I imagining that then?!
