Advantages: Good for Breaking News stories
Disadvantages: Adverts and lots of repeating of headline stories
Sky News is a channel on freeview that everyone should be able to receive fo free whether or not you have a Sky Subscription that runs 24 hours a day. It used to be on channel 501 on sky but this may change depending upon your internet or TV package provider. For example, it is on channel 602 on Virgin media.
I find myself gravitating towards Sky News normally as the first place I look if I hear some breaking news. I also turn over to Sky News if there is just nothing I fancy watching on TV as I would rather watch something factual than just sit flicking through channels endlessly until something I like comes on TV.
The only problem I have with Sky News is they tend to repeat the same stories every 15 minutes. So, technically, if you watch this for an hour they will have gone over the same news stories four times. This can get annoying and boring.
I like how there is a strip that runs along the bottom of the screen that gives you breaking news or headlines- so it is a good channel to watch if you are pressed for time- for example whilst you are having your breakfast before you leave for work or whilst you are waiting for a partner or your kids to get ready to go out. I think the 15 minute news rotation and the strip along the bottom of the screen lends itself to concise news- so it is possible for you to be fully up to date on all the major news stories in the world if you have just watched Sky News for 10-15 minutes whilst you were waiting to go out.
I find if I turn over and have this channel on in the background for any length of time, I start to get bored when I start to hear the same stories. At the moment the Elections are featuring heavily, but it is not constant coverage- even today on polling day, there is a lot of world news on. On the programme listings, the channel splits its time into hour or half hour slots. Mainly it will just say "News, sport, weather" or "Sky News at Six" but sometimes you get a special slot with a commentator or a special programme so this is not just someone sat reading the news to you from behind a desk 24 hours a day.
I like how the time is displayed on the screen too- in the same way as BBC News 24. Sky News is better than BBC News 24 as it is more about World News and their coverage of events seems to be quicker with breaking news than other news channels. The newsreaders are normally one man and one woman and the studio is brightly lit with a view of a back office in the background- computers and desks etc., I always find it funny when you see someone walking past or ducking in the background! Yes this still happens.
There are lots of adverts on Sky News though which can also be infuriating. As the adverts seem to go on forever- this is annoying if you are following an unfolding story. So in this sense, BBC News 24 is better as there are no adverts on the BBC.
Overall, I like Sky News but find it cannot be watched for hours and hours as they do repeat the same stories several times an hour- so it is more intended to give you a round up of the world's news in a short timeframe.
Summary: Great to catch up on news in a short space of time
