Advantages: Never miss your favourite programmes

Disadvantages: Can crash

Sky Plus is an amazing and innovative product from Sky Television that allows you to record your tv shows digitally to your set top box. My parents had it just after it was released and I got a Sky Plus box as soon as I moved into my own house in February 2007.

It was launched in 2001 and has since dominated the market, causing their nearest competitor TiVo to withdraw from the market after 18 months (an American company who are huge, not just the USA, but Canada, Australia and Japan).

The main premise of Sky Plus is that you are able to record all your favourite shows. You can record them as far in advance as you want, as long as they are on the tv guide. The Sky plus box is 160gb and has 80gb to store programmes. I have about 30 programmes recorded on mine and it's still not full.

One of the best features of Sky Plus in my opinion is the fact that you can set it to record a whole series at once, eliminating the need to remember to set it to record the programme.

You can also pause live tv, another fantastic feature. If you need to use the toilet or are cooking something you can pause it. If you have paused it for long enough, you can fast forward it through the advert break.

In June 2007, they stopped charging their fee of £10 a month meaning that once you pay the initial charge for the box it is free, making it even more fantastic.

The only criticism I have is that sometimes the box crashes like a computer would which is very annoying. It hardly ever happens to me but I do know people who have had to have their Sky Plus boxes replaced, meaning that they lose all of their recorded programmes.

Pausing live tv is so good - especially if you have the pesky adds every 15 minutes!
Good overall review!

I love the idea of this, but always asumed it was too expensive - How much does it cost for the initial outlay?
