Advantages: Easy to use, no need for blank DVD/video's, lots of memory and stores everything recorded

Disadvantages: High pitched hum to get used to

I really don't know how we survived pre sky plus! We already had sky but decided to look into sky plus as our DVD recorder had broken down. My husband had nagged and nagged me for so long wanting a sky plus box, but I couldn't see the point as we already had a perfectly good DVD recorder. Therefore when the DVD recorder broke down I never heard the end of it. Eventually I gave in and we purchased a sky plus box.

Why didn't someone tell me about this before (sorry darling)! What an amazing invention to be able to pause and rewind normal TV! Recording programmes is so simple and just at the touch of a button, no messing about finding a blank video/DVD.

And watching what's been recorded is so much easier than any DVD/video recorder, it's foolproof really. There is space to record a lot of programmes, for example a film uses approximately 4-5% of the recording space, so you can keep a lot without having to delete them, and if you start watching something you've recorded and come back to it later it picks up from where you left off.

It also gives you the option of being able to automatically record every programme in a series without thinking about it each week, which we have found to be very useful with programmes we often forgot were on.

The only negative thing we have found with it is that the sky engineer told us when it was installed that the box hums slightly and that's normal. When our sky plus box sounded more like a vacuum cleaner I wondered if that was what he meant by humming! But when the engineer came back out to have a look at it he did say that was a lot louder than it should have been and swapped the box. Now all we hear is an occasional high pitched hum which we have got used to.

We were also very disappointed at the price of the box, I think we paid around £150 for the box as an existing sky customer and yet new sky customers were able to pick up a box for £50 which I found very confusing and frustrating. Sky obviously aren't that bothered about looking after their existing customers. I suppose on the other hand we'd have paid more than that for a DVD recorder, but that wasn't the point!

Having said that after getting over my initial bitterness it is definitely money well spent. This is an amazing invention that I now definitely couldn't live without.

Summary: A fantastic invention
