Advantages: Records and series links programs, pauses and rewinds live tv, easy to use
Disadvantages: Boxes are tempermental and can break
We upgraded to Sky Plus two years ago, not long after Sky abolished the monthly charge for it and it really has changed our life!
We had it installed round about the time our son was born. It was a lifesaver as we could never watch programmes on live tv anymore. In fact back then we hardly got time to watch any tv! Instead of having to look up in the paper what was on every night, program your VCR to tape it and find a video with enough space on to record what you wanted we could just press one button on our sky remote control!
The Sky guide and remote control are pretty much the same as the standard sky one, but your remote control has extra buttons on it. These include a red R button for record, a pause button to pause live tv and a rewind button. Great if you've missed something or need to make a quick drink. You can record a whole series of your favourite show just by pressing one button. This is great as you don't have to worry if they change the day or time your program is shown, the box just tapes it for you. You are allowed to record 2 channels at once, but can't watch a third channel the same time.
Your programs are stored on your planner which is also very easy to use. The amount of free space you have left is listed at the top followed by a list of all your programs with their status next to them e.g. recorded, viewed etc..
The only downside is that our Sky plus box has broken a few times and wiped all our programs out. As it is now out of warranty we would have to pay a £60 call out charge to Sky if it breaks again. Ouch!
Once you have tried Sky plus there is no going back - you simply cannot live without it again. Sad but true!
Summary: There's no going back to VCR recorders after trying Sky plus!
