Sky Sports 1
Advantages: First class sporting coverage
Disadvantages: Arguably to biased towards football
Sport lovers of the world unite - this is the ultimate in Sports broadcasting. It is of course Sky Sports 1. Owned by BskyB, it has played not only a major part it broadcast sport over nearly the last two decades, but also in changing the face of sport. From encouraging the Premier League to be founded, to the advent of Twenty20 cricket, it has been groundbreaking, and only good for sport...hasn't it?
Available on Sky channel 401, along with Virgin Media channel 511, Sky Sports 1 broadcasts around the clock and being number '1' it will showcase the biggest games that will bring in the largest audience. This primarily means football, and ever since it started, each weekend the live Premier League games can be found on Sky Sports 1. Almost religiously, they will kick off at 4pm on Sunday, and depending on how many games have been moved from their normal 3pm Saturday kick-off, there will be games on Saturday at 12.45pm and Sunday at 1.30pm. They used to also host Monday Night Football, which kicked off at 8pm, but those rights have since moved on to Setanta, and now ESPN.
Other shows definitely shown on Sky Sports 1, rather than 2, 3 or Xtra include Soccer AM, every Saturday morning from 9am during the football season. Gillette Soccer Saturday, which is shown after Soccer AM, or after the live football if a game kicks off at 12.45pm. Hosted by Jeff Stelling, you can see in amongst my review archive that I think that this programme is pure genius!!
Football is the crown jewel in Sky's sport broadcasting, primarily due to popularity and sponsorship money that it can generate. Other big live matches from other sports will be broadcast on Sky Sports 1, but often 'big' football games will conquer all. England's cricket teams test matches will be shown on Sky Sports 1 - but were a big Premier League game on, the cricket would be substituted to Sky Sports 2, purely due to audience figures. The same can be said about the England rugby team.
Sky Sports have had a big say in the development and availability of both cricket and football broadcasting. Since buying the rights of England test matches from Channel 4, it's coverage has been dedicated and developed impressive new technology. Rugby's Guiness Premiership and big European competition - the Heineken Cup, and given a lot of airtime, and along with Sky Sports 2, Sky Sports 1 will broadcast all live games from these competitions.
Another sport to benefit from Sky Sports 1 is tennis. All Masters tournaments and the US Open are shown on Sky Sports, but the Grand Slam and 'big' Masters events will find airtime on Sky Sports 1, as you'd expect as again they are simply going to generate a decent sized audience.
Of course, it's not live sport 24 hours a day as that's simply not possible, so often you'll find re-runs of recent games shown on the channel. The Monday after a Sunday football game at 4pm will often see a couple of re-runs, along with the 'Last Word' show with Andy Gray and Richard Keys. Coverage of Spain's La Liga will also find a lot of airtime and with Sky buying the rights to the Scottish Premier League last season, those north of the border are getting a fair crack of the whip.
Of course, sports such as Rugby League during the Super League season will get coverage of live games on Sky Sports 1, but the same principle remains - if Premier League football is on, then that will get priority. It's a rule that so may argue against, but it also helps with consistency in the schedule and so people know where to find it.
Of course, you need to have a sports subscription package to be able to view any of the Sports channels (expect Sky Sports News of course), so if you haven't got that then you're best bet is to find a pub that shows it! Many have said the advent of satellite television has meant big sporting events are restricted in their viewing - but you can't help but credit Sky Sports for their dedication to showing high class sport with high class production. Bravo!
