Victorious Australian captain Steve Waugh said that player safety must be re-examined after Michael Bevan was hit by a full beer can during the presentation ceremony at Lord's.

"Michael was hit by a full can of VB - one of crickets sponers that was the only good thing about it. It came from the crowd and hit him straight in the face.

"It could have been serious, I don't know how bad it is going to be. It's just the thought that someone could be seriously injured.

"What can you say and what can you do? It was very disappointing. It was a great day and then some idiot ruins it for everyone. I hope we can learn a few more lessons from that I guess."

Turning to the cricket, Waugh added: "It was a great team result. Everyone contributed today and I'm really pleased with the way we played. The bowling was really spot on today."

Bevan was immediately examined by a doctor based at the ground and it was confirmed he had only suffered bruising.

"I was a bit lucky because it (the beer can) could have hit my in the eye or the mouth," a relieved Bevan

"Because I turned side on it hit me on the cheekbone," explained Bevan. "It would have hit me on the front of the face I had still been looking into the crowd
