Advantages: Great football coverage, All the major events, Digital Interactivity
Disadvantages: Interactivity isn't as fluid as you'd like
Let's face it the days of Elton Welsby on a sunday afternoon with the division 1 football are long gone. Since the premier league started there has only been one place to see the best of English league football and that's on Sky. Now that Sky Digital is well on the way to being in many a home, there has never been a better time for the footy fan to get their fix. Sky Sports 1 is the premier channel for Sky when it comes to Sports, it's probably one of the main reasons that people have the little dish on their wall. For around £37 you can have the full sky package and access to all the sports and major football interactivity. Premier league matches are over the weekend throughout the season and most of the teams get a look in although naturally the likes of Arsenal will feature more heavily that others. Sky are heavy on the presentation of their premier product and each game comes with digital interactivity. At the touch of a button you can have access to different camera angles, highlights and commentary tracks. The functionality of this service isn't as perfect as you may think. Choosing to view a game in a different way from the main camera angle can give poorer picture quality and there is more chance of a break-up. However it's makes things interesting and there's no reason to miss highlights of the first half if you've come in for the second. One of the great ideas since the digital revolution is to have opposing fans provide in-game commentary. This can lead to some good laughs. Every game is treated with loads of stats and analysis from the likes of Andy Gray. It's very american in ethic but a darn site better than the likes of the BBC can offer. You really do get you money's worth. Of course football isn't the only sport, the channel also represents such interests as Boxing, Golf, Cricket and even Wrestling. In fact this is the only place to catch WWF main events as they happen live. Major ev
ents like the Ryder Cup are also heavily featured. What the channel offers over everybody else is lengthy coverage. It's the only thing that the terrestrial channels can't compete with. It offers sports programming such as live phone in show's and some laughs on a Saturday morning with Soccer AM. Previously I've thought that Sky is a tad on the expensive side but then again if you like Sport then comparing this to the total cost of seeing a live football game for instance is a no-brainer.
