Advantages: Rolling sports news
Disadvantages: On loop 24 hours a day, gets boring after a short while
It's hard to think that just 11 years ago rolling sports news was unheard of and the reliance on the days football news was on Ceefax, the radio or (whisper it) the next days newspapers!!!
Fast forward to the present and the growth in technology means that fans know the ins and outs of each club well before news is even confirmed and made official, such is the demands on sport and football in general.
For all the rolling hours SSN churns out, it still suffers the same fate as all news channels...repetition. Any major news item featuring the top clubs is repeated every ten minutes or so with the news differing very little from hour to hour.
As would be expected from any sports show/channel major focus is on the Big Four in football and everything else fits around. Thankfully the rolling news bar at the bottom does focus on other leagues and sport whilst the stats feature on the right hand side of the page does keep viewers up to date with current league tables, fixtures and scorers.
Presenter wise the show is ermm....wooden. The female presenters are eye candy whilst the male presenters know nothing about sport it seems and their 'opinions' seem to come from the script. Credit has to go to the likes of Georige Thompson, Alex Hammond (maiden name) et al who do appear to shake off the eye candy tag and prove themselves as credible sports journalists.
I must admit I did like the old Sports Centre at 6pm which was a good round up of the days news rather than rolling news which is easily bored of. That said the Sports Centre didn't even consider lower leagues and other sports if it could help it. SSN brings news coverage outside the top four that no other media does.
Overall this is a good station and I must confess I like to have it on in the background but struggle to really watch it more than 30 minutes per day without getting bored.
Summary: Ideal for a quick round up but otherwise a turn-off.
