Advantages: You don't see any adverts
Disadvantages: It is so unfair.
Ok, I personally don't think that the TV licence was too bad a thing, 20 years ago.... The TV licence is essential if you have a TV in your house. Even if you have a TV/Radio combination. You have to have a TV licence, whether you use that TV to make your own movies, simply play videos or DVD's or play computer games, you HAVE to have a licence, it is essential, even if you have never watched a minute of broadcasting in that TV's life. Why? Because the BBC say so, and if your caught with a TV and no TV licence then you will be fined. This is stupid. We can't have the choice of just watching ITV, or opting just to watch Sky. We HAVE to have a TV licence to pay for BBC1 and BBC2 even if we do not wish to use it. Thats like paying for a bus to work each morning, and never using it and going in your car, you just have to pay for it, we wouldnt stand for that. Recently my dad was doing up his house in the midlands as he had some tenants moving in and he wanted them to be happy with the decor etc. He took a TV/Radio combination up with him so he could listen to the radio while he was working, fair enough... The TV in it didnt even work, thats why he used it for work, it dosent matter if it got paint and sawdust all over it. He then got a knock on the door by the TV licence man telling him that he would either have to pay £100 for the licence, or take the TV/Radio combination away. My dad showed the licence man that it didnt work, but he still insisted he MUST have a licence and would unexpectidly call again to make sure he had got rid of the TV/Radio combi. So he couldnt even use the radio with the broken TV because the BBC said so. Another case is when my mate went to Uni. He took his TV so he could play his playstation when he had nothing else to do. He then was forced to buy a licence, even though he didnt have an aerial to tune into the stations! He had to pay the BBC so he could play on his playstation. T
he BBC really needs to re-think the licence. We don't pay for sky if we don't want it, we don't pay for film 4 if we dont want it, why should we pay for the BBC if we don't want it, and why should we have to pay the BBC just to play video games on our TV sets?! I think the government should do something about this as it is not fair that if we have a TV we HAVE to pay a licence fee for 2 channels. Plus, i thought the BBC were against advertising, but they now have an advert on ITV for their online shop thingy! It is a very unfair system, but after all, were british, and of course, we'll sit back while yet another company wins. Reminds me of BT actually....

- 10/10/00 We were taken to task because the tenants in our house were watching without a licence - it was only when we showed our'contract' (which clearly stated that tenants were responsible for their own TV licence) that the powers that be backed off. I think that as satellite TV becomes more popular, the BBC will be forced to rethink it's policies, especially as they are losing so many quality programmes (eg Harry Enfield) to Sky etc. |
