When my parents moved out, I had a bill through the door demanding something like £150 for the 'privilege' of watching TV; I was shocked! Yes, a TV licence will now set you back over £10 a month, and I immediately de-tuned my TV and opted out of one of the most over-priced things in the world. Some people will disagree with this, but you ARE allowed to watch catch-up TV through the internet without a license.

Now, you can watch all the BBC channels on the Iplayer, ITV on ITV.com and Channel 4 on the OD player. That means you can watch pretty much everything without a license.

Your license also pays for the radio, but again you can listen to this through the internet. Having said that, I am not someone who has ditched my license just so I can do it for free, I honestly don't believe it is good value to pay those prices.

Put it this way: £150 could rent you 70 DVD movies from a local DVD store, which is more than one a week. If you were to watch one really good new film a week wouldn't you be getting more value than you get out of a license? A lot of you would say no, but then that maybe because you've fallen into the trap of watching so much TV because it is there.

No, in my opinion, there isn't £150 worth of good programming on TV to warrant the investment, so I don't. We use the internet to watch the odd must-view program such as the X Factor, Dragons' Den and The Apprentice, but that's it.

All in all, an overpriced licence that isn't worth it - you're much better renting a bunch of films!
