Disadvantages: All the tripe it shows

TV3 has been around since 1998 and quite frankly I ask whats the point of it?

The station is the third Irish national television station behind rte and tg4. It runs as an alternative to rte, the main Irish broadcaster. Its most viewed programmes are coronation street and its news bulletins which run at the times of five thirty and six thirty. These bulletins are strategically placed around the main national news at six o’clock on rte one. It’s the same news repeated. Id swear that tv3 listen to sky news to get there news, half the time.

But what is the point of tv3?

Nearly all its shows are repeats or repeats of repeats that have already been show on other stations who anyone with cable, satellite or digital already have and seen.

The commercial breaks on the station are fair long. All its movies have more adverts than any other station than I have viewed. I know a television station needs the ads for income and usually this income is put into developing new programmes or quality television, but this doesn’t happen with tv3.

The station very rarely brings out a genuine home-grown Irish television programme that is worth viewing. The last one they did was ‘the Box’ which was ok and a fair attempt at reality television. The programme involved two participants living in a glass box in Dublin city centre and every day being faced with a series of questions to remain in the box, the loser being substituted with another contestant. The longer you stayed in the box the more cash you earned.

Compared with rte’s programmes, a clear divide of quality is evident. Legend and Killnascully are streets ahead of anything tv3 has to offer.

Last year tv3 lost the rights for champions league and this void has not been filled with anything worth watching. When they did the soccer their commentary and analysis was definitely below par than all other stations doing likewise, with the exception of Setanta who get league of Ireland people to talk about a competition they have never played in. But at least tv3 showed something you could watch not to mention listen to.

If tv3 were to loose Corrie then it’s a gonner. That show and some good films are all it has to offer its audience, anything else you can watch it on uktv or paramount.

Summary: Channel 6 is miles ahead of tv3 and its not even a year old!

Unfortunately as a uk tv watcher I am unfamiliar with the channels, however as a regular visitor it would be nice to read a review and familiarise myself a bit more with the best channels.

I have given you a ''VERY USEFUL'', although I would have liked to see a bit more clarification of names used. We are not all familiar with Irish life.
For example, do you have any state owned station for which a licence fee is paid?
I just found the review SLIGHTLY confusing.
