Advantages: Silliness can be fun
Disadvantages: Limited appeal
3rd Rock from the Sun is an American TV comedy series that I really enjoyed just for the sheer siliness of the whole thing, it has some excellent comedy lines in it which were very funny indeed and some of the plots were quite simple but very effective.
The basic premise of the show is that a team of four aliens have come to earth and assumed human life forms with the intention of gathering data on our habits and culture, they assume identities as a regular American family structure however one of the nice quirks is that the senior members of the team are the children so naturally the so called head of the house is not the one who is most senior on the mission.
John Lithgow is excellent in the role of Dr Dick Solomon who takes a job at a university and has a pompous air about him , his sister Sally is played by Kirsten Johnston who has a sort of Amazon quality. The last two younger members of the team are Tommy and Harry, teenage boys played by Joseph Gordon Levitt and French Stewart.
Some of the story lines are a bit absurd and the Giant Talking Head always made me laugh as well, Dick is the butt of many of the jokes in his rather awkward attempts to blend in while the other crew members each have their own idiosyncracies, this is a harmless fun comedy and you can still catch repeats on some of the comedy cable channels.
Summary: American comedy

- 13/05/09 I used to love this and was so disappointed when it came to an end! BTW, Sally was Prof Solomon's sister, not his wife. |
