Channel 4 have hidden this after midnight on a Thursday so I wanted to alert people to the fact it's there.
If you were a fan of The Larry Sanders Show there's a good chance you'll like this. It's co-produced by the producer of Larry Sanders (Chris Thompson) and Joel Silver (Die Hard, etc), and is a wickedly observed satire on Hollywood - specifically the large corner of Hollywood producing formulaic, dumb american action movies (Joel has a sense of humour!).
It follows the fortunes of Peter Dragon - head of Dragon Fire films (check out their web-site on www.dragonfirefilms.com!) whose latest movie - Slow Torture - has just bombed. Before release the only person who had told him his film sucked was a prostitute he had met quite by accident at the premiere. He subsequently has a bit of a mid-life crisis, takes the whore on as his chief advisor much to the disgust of his loyal staff, and sets off making his next 'blockbuster' - Beverley Hills Gun Club.
The jokes come thick and fast. As in all comedies one or two don't hit the mark but the next funny line comes along so quick you don't notice (in this respect it reminded me very much of Seinfeld). With being very American I missed some of the references but much of the humour is actually very 'British' (in fact the show did not get huge audiences in the US despite good reviews).
The cast seem to be having a whale of the time - big meaty characters all given some great lines. Watch out for some clver cameos as well. So far Keanu Reeves and Selma Hayek have turned up and been suitably self-deprecating.
One warning would be that it is not for kids or the easily shockable.
If you don't fall into these categories check it out. It won't be to everyone's tastes but I love it - and only found it by accident. Spread the word.
