Advantages: Funny fun poke into celebs' personal lives
Disadvantages: A bit samey
Mr and Mrs is a TV program which features married couples as they are asked questions about each other, designed to test knowledge of your partner in a quiz against other couples. All Star Mr and Mrs is designed to bring on celebrity couples to take part in the quiz, with prizes being based on gifts or money to charity, whereas the original show with Mr and Mrs Joe Bloggs featured them winning something.
I enjoy the program, but find it a bit of a borign format. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all seems to be the majority rule here. As the cometitive nature is somewhat nullified by the prizes/money going to charity, it takes away the personal aspect. With the normal program, we're rooting for the contestants, who are obviously determined to guess their partners correctly. Witht he celeb version, instead of rooting for them, the substitute is often a comedic value.
This is where presenters Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton come in. Having worked for a number of years together, it is almost like havign a celebrity couple hosting the show. They provide a constant source of entertainment, and are both charismatic and funny to watch. They interact very well with the celebs that come on the show, perhaps even more so than the regular couples that come on.
The idea is to go through a series of games, proving how well you know not just your partner, but also what they think about you and your habits, too. Games include puttng one partner in a soundproof booth while the other answers personal questions, before the deafened partner has to come out and give the same answers to the same questions. I like this game, as it often has hilarious consequences if they give a wrong or controversial answer. The phrase, 'Wait til we get home!' is often an apt one, methinks!
However, my favourite game is where they both stand, separated by a partition, each with a pink and a blue bat. The idea of this is that Phil and Fern ask who is more likely to do something or say something, giving a different scenario each time. They have to hold up blue for him, pink for her, and the idea is that they must both hold up the same one. Again, this could easily result in arguments afterwards.
It makes it all the more watchable for me when there are celebs involved. I suppose I like a bit of gossip, and celebes just interest me more on TV than the general public. You also get to see some celebs out fo their comfort zone, which is always nice.
The show is aired on ITV, and tends to fill primetime slots, often on a Saturday night around the 8pm mark. It's a good show to have on then, reminiscent of the fun gameshows we used to get on Saturday nights like the Generation Game, whereas nowadays it is more about talent shows than the gameshow factor. It usually has a rather short run, which is also good, as it jeeps you interested and lessens the boredom element that s often present when it comes to weekly shows that don't change their format.
Overall, I recommend watching this. It is more entertaining than the regular show with couples from the general public, and the comedy is often better with the celeb version. It runs for about an hour, with a few ad breaks, and just gives us traditional Saturday night fun. I try to catch it when I can, and will continue to do so fr as long as they keep making them.
Summary: Saturday night entertaining celeb gameshow fun

- 23/07/09 I always find this show to be far more entertaining that I think it probably should be. Plus there is always the added diversion of answering the questions with the girlfriend, which somehow has thus far not led to any arguments! |
