Oh god I love this programme.
I shouldnt, I really shouldnt, but I do.

I even love Tyra Banks....or at least love to hate Tyra Banks, with her tranny styling, frozen forehead and dead eye/intense eye.

Ok.

So, ANTM (Americans next top model) starts off by holding auditions all over America for hapless teens who want to be models.
Not just any models mind.
Americas NEXT TOP model.

Yup.

So, they are shortlisted, and then shortlisted again, and then eventually, around 12 (sometimes more) are thrown into a house together (usually a house covered in pictures of good old Tyra) and whittled away each week until there is one winner.

Each week (or episode) there is a challenge, where the girls learn something, and are challenged on it, and then a photoshoot. sometimes the photoshoot is a video shoot, or a commercial shoot. usually toward the end, its a fashion show.

This show is so far from reality, its hysterical.

Im quite positive that in the real world of modelling, a grasp of ballet is completely unessential, but ah well. This is not the real world, Its Tyra world, and in Tyra world, the aspiring models are taught many skills that they would otherwise find completely useless.

They are always taught to dance, they are always taught to act.
A big issue is always made about someones accent.

Seems to me that all cosmetic ads are dubbed anyway, but what do I know ;)

However ridiculous the show is, and however far removed it is realistically from what modelling is realy like, the show is truly addictive, and utterly compelling.
The interaction between the girls is fascinating, and some of the photoshoots they do are incredibly interesting.

If you want realism, then watch Make me a supermodel.

If you want to practice your pout, and dream of being the Next top model, then watch Tyra.

Summary: A not very realistic glance at the modelling world.
