Advantages: educational
Disadvantages: old fashioned
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
Members of the public swarm on a famous property for the day to get their antiques valued by some of the country's leading experts. At the same time the host interjects with a tour of the location, often including interviews with important figures from that locality.
IS IT ANY GOOD:
If you've lived in the UK for twenty years or more, this show is part of your heritage, part of your psyche. It appeals to people on many levels, the main ones being:
1) Antiques: as I said in another review, there is something about antiques that appeals to people. Maybe it's the way we all wonder if we have some great valuable item hidden away, or just the love of making a profit on a purchase, but people love antiques. Shows like 'Lovejoy' or the more modern 'Cash in the Attic' and 'Bargain Hunt' prove there is a love of this topic, and no show does it better than Antiques Roadshow.
2) Voyeurism: As a nation, we love to see what people own, how they dress, and how they react to a valuation. All of this satisfies our desire to know more about people than we do. Think about it - how often do you watch this show waiting to see how someone reacts? That's half the fun isn't it?
The show itself is presented in a very prosaic pace, and the beginning intro to the location is VERY boring in my opinion. There is little effort to 'jazz it up', and you get the opinion they are aiming the show at the older audience, but that doesn't mean you can't learn a lot from it.
IF YOU LIKED IT:
You should try other antique shows such as 'Cash in the Attic' and 'Bargain Hunt', both of which are on day-time TV.
IN CONCLUSION:
A national treasure, the Antiques Roadshow is a peaceful programme that both educates and entertains.
Summary: watch it!
