Advantages: Amusing and Engaging

Disadvantages: Suffers from too many wanabee travel journos (Boorman et al)

Possibly the "Daddy" of travel programmes, the series even challenges Alan Whicker for the crown of travel programmes.

Made over 20 years ago, Around The World in 80 Days has not dated; and is as watchable and engaging today as it was in 1988 - despite the transformation of most of the places featured in the series, not least the mecca that is Dubai.

Palin is convincing and articulate as both a travel journalist and an "everyday bloke" who is viewing an exotic location for the first time. He never steals the show and allows the audience to make their own mind up about places.

Highlights include the wonderful, emotive journey on the dhow boat, his journey on the Orient Express and his lacklustre welcome back to London, England.

Camerawork and production are typically BBC (professional and objective) in style and overall, this is a masterful gem when compared to Charley Boorman's terrible attempt at producing the same sort of journey.

Summary: They don't make then like they used to...
