Avengers, TheNewest Review: ... people with imposters throughout the show in order for them to acheive they're evil ends. Whilst a lot of the epsidoes are dark they're are a few of the more outlandish plotlines coming in (quite a few of which would be reused in Emma Peel seasons with only minor cosmetic changes, they were mainly remade for the american market which didn't buy the Cathy Gale Episodes). The first three seasons see John Steed (Patrick Macnee) mellowing somewhat from a distinctly shadowy and quite unpleasent at times (finds nothing wrong with a bit of torture in order to get answers), to a much pleasenter fellow. The original run of the Avengers lasted for seven seasons from 1961-69 and comprised of 161 episodes. The series started with Steed (you can't have the Avengers without him) and Dr David Keel (Ian Hendry), however only one episode of this season is known to have survived, 'The Frighteners'. In the sesond season we get Dr Martin King (Jon Rollason), Venus Smith & Cathy Gale (who goes on to become Steeds only partner in season 3). THE AVENGERS was a kooky television show, or at least that is what it developed into. It wasn't meant to be like that at the beginning. The show originally starred Ian Hendry as a doctor whose wife was murdered. Hendry's character, Dr. Keel, decided to avenge his wife's death (hence the title of the show) and his partner in this was Patrick MacNee as John Steed. The show was first aired in 1961, with the final episode being shown in 1969. The early episodes with Hendry are very rare these days, although I remember one being shown during an AVENGERS repeats season on Channel 4 a few years back (the episode was called THE FRIGHTENERS). Hendry ... Read the complete review

Every different series offered a slightly different mix of action and entertainment. The change of female lead was one of the main reasons for this, but the familiar, friendly face of Patrick McNee helped the continuity. This is yet another great programme to unwind to, and great retro entertainment of course. The female characters really get in on the action, even though it looks a bit lame today, it was an impressive move forward. The format is predictable, but the individual story lines are original, colourful and interesting. Improbable enemies and events, but I love it all the same. There really should be another re-run on terrestrial TV. I ... Read the complete review
