Advantages: Decent show all round
Disadvantages: Nothing majorly special
Bad Girls is a prison drama series that ran on ITV between 1999 and 2006. It featured the fictional Larkill Women's Prison, and each week focused on the main inmates and wardens invovled with the prison.
The storylines were at times harrowing, and often bridged a numkber of episodes. As such, it is a hard drama to just watch a random episode of. There are those that have one storyline featuring all the way through, but the constant plots and character development throughout each series is lost on those who don't really watch it from the beginning.
I first started watching it when I borrowed the box set from a housemate, curled up one afternoon while ill at University (ill, not hungover!) and watched the best part of 10 episodes in one day! Although I found it entertaining, it was easy watching and the episodes didn't really vary each time and I didn't feel I had to concentrate too much to get the gist of what was going on.
Bad Girls has made stars of some of its cast, who have been praised for their performances and gone on to bigger things. Debra Stephenson is one such actress, who has gone on to have a solid role on Coronation Street before taking a break for a family. Similarly, some of the cast have chosen to remain with the show until it finished in 2006, and others have joined the show having already made their names elsewhere, such as Claire King of Emmerdale fame and Amanda Barrie, of Corrie fame.
Bad Girls is an entertaining show to watch, and it won't be long before repeats start appearing all over ITV2, 3, 4 and whatever other channels pop up. The acting is decent, and the props and sets are miles better than Prisoner Cell Block H! Give it a go. It's nothing special, but better than a lot of a lot of programs to have come our way over the past decade or so.
Summary: Entertaining but not great
