Everyone has a special toy which needs a bit of repair, perhaps a good wash but was and perhaps in some cases is still well loved. As a youngster, like Emily, you may have wondered what would happen to your favourite toys when you are not around. Basically Bagpuss is what Emily ... more |

It may surprise you to know but only 12 episodes of Bagpuss were ever made. Yet if you ask almost any person growing up in the late 1970's and early 1980's they all remember and most have fond memories of the pink and white saggy cloth cat. In fact Bagpuss has been voted one of the best children's programmes of all time. Considering its short life span, especially when compared to today's children's tv what makes this charming tale so appealling? One of the reasons could be Emily, the girl who owns Bagpuss. Although apart from right at the beginning of each episode she is never seen, she is important because Bagpuss is her special toy. Everyone has a special toy ... Read the complete review

I have no children and therefore have no excuses to make when I purchased this complete Bagpuss DVD other the nostalgic personal enjoyment it brings. Bagpuss is the product of Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate through their production company, the aptly named Smallfilms, which was also responsible for The Clangers, Noggin' the Nog and Ivor The Engine. The one and only series of Bagpuss was first shown on our screens in 1974 and consists of just 13 episodes. Thought there was more? Me too! I just considered myself unlucky to catch the same episodes over and over for a decade and a half. The titles of the 13 episodes are; ... Read the complete review

Bagpuss was a Childhood favourite of mine when I was a little girl. It was launched in 1974 and there like many of these programs there was only ever thirteen made which are now available as a complete series on DVD. The series is written by Oliver Postage and Peter fermin. The Synopsis Bagpuss was a sad old saggy cloth cat who lived in the window of a shop owned by a little girl called Emily. Each episode Emily would find a thing. Bagpuss would wake up as would all his friends and they would explore and mend the item before putting it in the shop window so that if anyone had lost it they could come in and claim it. The ... Please forgive me if it seems I am suffering from false memory syndrome, or get a few of the details wrong, but Bagpuss was a long long time ago. If I recall correctly I would get up on a Saturday morning before my parents and would be a little bored waiting for everyone to rise. So, it was a choice between Tony Blackburn and Arnold, or the telly. So, the telly would go on and the choice would be The Open University or... ummm... nothing, well Carol Hersee, her infinitiely static game of noughts and crosses and Bubbles the clown - test card F - were talking the 1970s So I would plump for The Open University. This might explain why I had ... Read the complete review

Bagpuss is a television program about a large pink and white stuffed toy which is owned by a little girl called Emily. For some reason Emily has access to a shop(?!) in which she displays things that she has found lying about so that if for some reason a person comes by that has lost said item, they can collect it. "As if by magic" in each programme Bagpuss comes alive, as do all his friends (a woodpecker, a large ragdoll called Madeline, a frog and lots of little mice) who clean up the item, decipher what it is and tell a story or sing a song about it. If this is sounding like a strange programme to you it's not really a surprise until you are ... Read the complete review
