Advantages: Great childhood nostalgia

Disadvantages: None

Bagpuss was a Childhood favourite of mine when I was a little girl. It was launched in 1974 and there like many of these programs there was only ever thirteen made which are now available as a complete series on DVD. The series is written by Oliver Postage and Peter fermin.

The Synopsis

Bagpuss was a sad old saggy cloth cat who lived in the window of a shop owned by a little girl called Emily. Each episode Emily would find a thing. Bagpuss would wake up as would all his friends and they would explore and mend the item before putting it in the shop window so that if anyone had lost it they could come in and claim it.

The characters

Bagpuss is a pink and white cloth cat that has magical powers. When Bagpuss wakes up all his friends wake up and when he goes to sleep so do all his friends. The BBC website claims that originally Bagpuss should have been a marmalade coloured cat but the wrong coloured fur arrived so it was decided it was destiny to have a pink cat,

The mice

The mice are carved into the mechanical mouse Organ but when Bagpuss Wakes up they all come to life they are soften singing and dancing. Charley mouse seemed to be the lead mouse

Professor Yaffel

He is a woodpecker wooden book end who likes to consider himself to be very knowledgeable on all subjects. He wears spectacles which seem to give him which give him an air of authority about him.

Madeline

She was a rag doll who sits in a wicker chair and often tells the story; she seems to be the sensitive one and often has the most common sense

Gabriel the toad who plays a banjo and sits on a tin and even when awake never moves off the tin. He often sings songs.

This is a simple short children's program which has some repetitive phrases which always starts and finishes in the same way. Each episode has many similarities with a story and a song often with music from the mouse organ .Each time they never know exactly what the item is when it arrives but they carefully piece together there ideas and always discover what Emily has left and returns it to its original state.

Bagpuss is the centre of all the action and often has thoughts which transcend into stories. While all the other characters have a great likeability about them Bagpuss is the one that you want to pick up and cuddle.

I have spent many hours watching this TV program and would happily while away another few. True Child nostalgia.

Summary: A great way to reminisce
