Disadvantages: SONG COULD DRIVE PARENTS MAD

Balamory is a long running childrens t.v. programme which is both entertaining and educational. It is shown on BBC1, BBC2 and CBeebies.

The programme is filmed in the small village of Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull, in Scotland.

Each programme starts and ends with the same song, the title of which is,
"What's the story in Balamory".

The introduction to the programme shows a boat sailing past Balamory and you can see the houses which are all different colours.

It is always introduced by Miss Hoolie who is the nursery teacher. She lives in a green house and wears green clothes. Each morning she opens the cupboard door and takes something different from it. This item is then the theme for that day's programme e.g., a biscuit cutter means the kids will be baking, a paint brush means they will be painting, or a magnifying glass means they will be searching for something.

The children are brought to the nursery each day, on the school bus, by Eadie McCredie. She lives in a blue house and wears blue clothes.

Spencer the painter lives in an orange house and wears orange clothes. He cycles around Balamory with his paint pots and brushes. It is Spencer who helps the children with their painting.

Josie jump lives in a yellow house and wears yellow clothes. She helps the children with their outdoor activities.

Archie the inventor lives in a pink house and wears pink clothes. He helps the children to make things from yoghurt pots etc.

Penny Pocket and Suzie Sweet live in a red house and they run the shop and cafe which the children often visit.

P.C. Plum lives in a white house and wears a police uniform with a black and white stripped scarf. He helps the children to look for clues to find things that have been lost.

In each programme the above characters appear with the children. The children do a lot of singing and dancing at the nursery.

Balamory educates the children while they are having fun. It is easy for them to identify each character by their clothing. They also learn their colours. I am certain this will be a firm favourite for years to come. My own grandaughter stops in her tracks as soon as she hears the tune.
